The Brunfyrd Alving is a country located in the Northeast of Mithandor, specifically on the Eastern continent - where it is one of the largest nations by population. It is currently led by Jarl JoshyGamer.

It has been described as either a Jarldom or Clandom, with its executive and legislative council being the Althing; consisting of representatives from Brunfyrd's clans.

History

Prehistory

For an interim of about seven-hundred years, the region of Brunfyrd was led by four clans which each were government by a Huskarl of their own. These included the Makir, Skjuman, Hysard, and Skajen clans. While ethnically all of these clans were all Brunts and spoke Bruntisch, there were deep familial feuds between the four. It was also considered socially taboo for individuals to marry outside of their clan. The different clans were effectively entirely separate governments in their own right. These clans and the ethnic group also extended South across the Bay of Lothes into the regions of Ahrgrim and Grimheim.

The region of Brunfyrd was, and still is, based on the delta of the Horst River, being connected to the Esterburg River as well by a tributary; these rivers drain into the Bay of Lothes. Most of the population resides in the wide valleys, as most of Brunfyrd, Ahrgrim, and Grimheim are mountainous in nature, with population centers resting at these mountain's foothills.

The Makir and Hysard clans historically resided in mountainous territories, though as with all the clans, their territories shifted constantly as a result of warfare. These clans resided widely on the hunting of goats, llamas, and deer for much of their early history. The Skajen clan by contrast resided in the foothills and open valleys and plains between the interlacing mountains, predominately residing off of agriculture. Lastly, the Skjuman clan resided along the rigid cliffs and coastlines of the Bay of Lothes and down the river estuaries, living off of fish and hunted aquatic wildlife.

Establishment of the Alving

Seven years before the foundation of the First Alving, the four clans went to brutal conflict with one another; the largest such war in over three-hundred years at that point. The Goat's War, as it was then called, was sparked by members of the Makir clan killing off the domesticated goats belonging to the Hysard clan in Brunfyrd's Northern reaches. Eventually this reached into total war as insults were exchanged between the Huskarls of both clans and they called upon their allies with the Skjumans and Skajens involving themselves in the brutal exchanges.

After years of conflict, the Huskarl of the Hysard clan and their allies in the Skjumans capitulated, but to the resistance of their population. The people overthrew the Huskarls of the Hysard and Skjuman clans, establishing a new government for their clans and an alliance. While the Makir wished to still annex and overthrow the Northern territories of the Hysard; the Skajen clan sought to be an intermediary in the conflict, going from an initially offensive role to a diplomatic negotiator. The young Huskarl of Skajen, named Orbjorn, oversaw the end to the conflict and proposed the creation of an Alving, or a council, of the clans, uniting them all under one banner. This way, Brunfyrd's four clans would also be stronger together, especially seeing as over the years they had gradually lost territory to the peoples of a then-fledgling nation called the Alpenstaat in Wolfburg and Esterburg.

The mutual hatred for the Goat's War and the threat of outside invasion provoked the Huskarls of the four clans of Brunfyrd to unite, forming the First Brunfyrd Alving on December 16th, 2023. They chose their first Jarl to be Orbjorn Skajen, who promptly became the nation's first leader. This was ultimately concretely finalized with the signing of the Accord of the Brunfyrd Alving, the nation's first and current constitution.

The Warring States Period

After the founding of the Brunfyrd Alving, conflict was immediately ripe as the four united clans were now in active conflict with the Alpens to their East and the Vons to the North; the nations of Alpenstaat and Von accordingly. As Brunfyrd expanded its lands, now bordering the regions of Vonland and Esterburg, war rose on the horizon and brutal skirmishes broke out along the Horst and Esterburg Rivers. Namely in the cities in Brynfjell and Wolfburg, at least four raids took place with most combatants lacking armor and using spears. Vons also participated in these raids. This was the initiation of the Warring States Period as the three nations were now in constant assaults against one another, though Von and Alpenstaat remained largely loyal to one another.

This early series of skirmishes was a major incentive for the three countries to rapidly industrialize and mass-manufacture clubs, rifles, pistols, zeppelins, boats, and planes. Brunfyrd was the most populous of the three countries but is believed to have all had similar industrial capacities at first.

The Warring States Period ultimately ended with the Agreement of the Three Nations, when Jarl Orbjorn and the leaders of the other two nations made a territorial agreement carving up the Northern half of the Eastern continent among themselves. Brunfyrd would cease the geographical region of Ahrgrim with sights on Grimfjell, Alpenstaat would begin to conquer all of Esterburg and parts of Falland, and Von would conquer the entirety of Vonland. While Alpenstaat and Brunfyrd laid primarily in the foothills of the mountains and along the river delta, Vonland was almost entirely mountainous with little to no easily terraformable terrain. This agreement was signed on the 17th of December, after months of conflict.

This would ultimately give way to a later complete alliance between Alpenstaat, Brunfyrd, and Von.

Government

Althing

The nation is governed by a legislative and executive council, called an Althing. This consists of a singular representative from each of the nation's four clans.

The Althing maintains complete legislative control of the nation and can demand executive orders to the Jarl, Drotirs, and Huskarls/Huskonas. All treaties, declarations of war, and other such vital decisions must also be done with the consent of the Althing.

Jarls, Huskarls, and Huskonas

The executive leader of the Brunfyrd Althing is the Jarl. This is traditionally a member of the Althing, but is not required to be. The Jarl is chosen by the Althing via a democratic vote, with majority consent declaring the appointment of the Jarl.

The Jarl maintains the right to give orders and generally guide the executive nature of the country; as well as acting as a representative for the Althing and Brunfyrd. They also have the express ability to appoint Huskarls or Huskonas, which act as assistants to the Jarl in various realms. Huskarl is the masculine and neutral term for the position, while a Huskona is the feminine title.

The Huskarl/Huskona of the Banner controls diplomatic relations with the outside world. The Huskarl/Huskona of the Feather controls literary, cultural, and internal affairs. The Huskarl/Huskona of the Axe maintains construction and development efforts. The Huskarl/Huskona of the Ship controls the planning and organization of new settlements and taxes. The Huskarl/Huskona of the Sword maintains the Citizen's Levies.

Drotirs

To put it simply, Drotirs act as overlords or mayors of individual settlements. They have near complete reign to do what they please with their settlement, but can be ordered to do things by the Althing.

There are no term limits for Drotirs, instead the position operates on a 'challenge system', meaning that they are indefinitely in the role until a citizen of the settlement challenges them at which point an election will occur, and the victor remains/becomes the Drotir.

The Drotir also has the ability to appoint a Quartermaster in their territory, who is a supplier and logician who provides materials and weapons to the Citizen's Levy.

Dromas

The Droma is a position appointed by the sitting Jarl. They act as legal arbiters and judges who handle internal and sometimes international disputes and have the ability to make conclusions for the state based on these disputes. They also have the ability to hand out disciplinary measures for crimes.

Citizen's Levy

The military of the Brunfyrd Althing is called the Citizen's Levy. Nearly every single citizen of Brunfyrd is provided weapons by the aforementioned Quartermaster of their settlement or the nearest large settlement and have the ability and permission to defend their settlements from bandits and foreign invading nationals.

Additionally, the military infrastructure of Brunfyrd is drastic, with nearly every building being made with the idea of military asset in mind. Brunfyrd is widely considered to have a militaristic society with service to the nation being widely considered a virtue.

Culture

Demographics

Nearly the entirety of Brunfyrd is a part of the Brunt population, being part of a wider ethnic group that the Alpens to their East and the Vons to their North also belong to. The vast majority adhere to a polytheistic folk religion.

War Rituals

It is a centuries long tradition during battles for Brunts to embrace complete camoflauge, for instance many will paint their skin as white as snow and wear loose white garments over skin-tight clothing made from goat fur, designed to make them blend into the snowy cliffsides of mountains.

It is common for the name of the war deity, Ura, to be chanted in charges or upon victory. Chanting “URAAA” is often seen as a nationalistic slogan of Brunfyrd.

Culinary Traditions

The consumption of meat is very rare in Brunfyrd, typically being reserved for special occasions. Grain and pumpkins are the two largest agricultural products in the region. While meat is seldom produced, chickens are domesticated for egg production. Sugarcane and carrots are also grown alongside warmer sections of river, but uncommonly.

Wheat grain is used in the production of bread, which is typically partnered with a dip of some kind. Sweetberries and sugar are often used to make a glaze or jam which is frequently placed on bread, though crushed pine nuts and pepper is sometimes mixed with lard to make a savory side for bread. Pumpkins, eggs, and sugar is frequently used to make pumpkin pies. Bread and pumpkin pies are believed to be the single most popular dishes in Brunfyrd. When meat is consumed, it is typically restricted to game and steak.

Moots

A Moot is a meeting between the people to discuss and debate topics affecting the government. So far there has been 1 Moot in which the first Jarl, Orbjorn, was replaced by the current Jarl, JoshyGamer. Other important news was the change of the leader of the Makir clan from Justlead to Finnish.
